For over sixty years, the cultural arts program at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre has introduced traditional Japanese arts to the Canadian community at large.
Led by many dedicated and talented volunteer instructors, the JCCC cultural arts program has endeavored to cultivate an appreciation for Japanese arts and develop the skills necessary to enjoy participation.

Bunka Shishu
Cultural Classes
Bunka Shishu, Japanese “Needle Punch” embroidery, uses rayon lily thread combined with specific stitching techniques to create lovely pieces of art
Chado - Urasenke
Cultural Classes
Students will learn procedures for making tea as well as how to integrate the spirit of tea into their studies and daily lives.
Ikebana - Ikenobo
Cultural Classes
Ikebana is the art of arranging flowers or plants to reflect their natural beauty.
Ikebana - Sogetsu
Cultural Classes
The Sogetsu School of Ikebana believes anyone can arrange Ikebana anywhere with a multitude of materials. Sogetsu encourages students to be individual and imaginative.
Japanese Language Program for Adults
Cultural Classes
Students learn the language of modern Japan. Structured classes, in an informal setting, provide the opportunity for active participation and practice.
Sumi-e
Cultural Classes
Sumi-e is a traditional brush painting technique based on using a brush and black ink or subtle watercolours on rice paper. This course is open to students of all levels, from beginner to advanced.
Taiko Drumming

Taiko-Japanese drum music has been a part of Japanese culture for centuries and more recently has become known for ensemble performance using different sizes and types of taiko.
