52-HERTZ WHALES

Kiko Mishima was exploited and abused by her family in Tokyo. She disconnects and moves to a small seaside town in Oita. There she comes across a boy whose own abusive mother calls him, "insect". She sees herself in him for being a “52-hertz whale”, a lone whale that can only speak in a high frequency other whales cannot hear in the vast ocean. Having been saved herself from a dark past, Kiko decides to take the lonesome boy under her wing. It turns, however, into an emotional journey to look back her own past…

Based on Sonoko Machida’s award-winning novel, this nuanced, emotionally powerful drama captures the unspoken voices of the lonely as they find one another and build connection.
