A masterless Edo Period samurai Tsuzuki ekes out a living providing protection to a small farming village. He teaches a local boy the way of the sword and quietly years after the boy’s older sister Yu. With the arrival of a mysterious ronin looking to build a mercenary army, and band marauding bandits on the edge of town, Tsuzuki’s peaceful existence will soon descend into violent chaos.

This poetic, unsentimental questioning of the cruel code of the warrior delivers moments of blistering intensity and ultraviolence.

２０１８年度ベネチア国際映画祭のコンペ部門出品作品。江戸時代末期の江戸近郊の農村を舞台に、時代の波に翻弄される浪人たちを、『鉄男』を手がけた塚本晋也監督が描く。

杢之進（池松壮亮）は困窮の末に藩を後にし、農家を手伝いながら、近所に住む姉弟のゆう（蒼井優）と市助（前田隆成）と共に穏やかな日々を送っていた。しかし剣の達人である澤村（塚本晋也）が村にやってきて、杢之進に京都の動乱に参戦しないかと誘いをかける。
