VOICES IN THE WIND
Winner: Special Mention, Berlin International Film Festival
Based on the actual pilgrimage spot called the “wind phone”, a disconnected telephone booth in Iwate Prefecture where mourners go to speak with people they’ve lost.
Haru lost her family to the 2011 tsunami disaster and has been raised by her aunt in Hiroshima. Compelled by the weight of her sorrow she hitchhikes back to her old home and along the way encounters people who have endured tribulations of their own. At the end of her journey awaits the “wind phone.”
Emotionally raw and filmed in a semi-documentary style, it is a “gentle yet epic road movie with a haunting finale that was simultaneously devastating and uplifting.”
